What is the Cancer Institute?
The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute is a non-profit, community-based agency working to address the burden of cancer in Northeastern Pennsylvania.  Focusing on research, education and support, and screening, the Cancer Institute is the only local cancer organization that invests all of its resources in this region.

How does the Cancer Institute help cancer patients, their families and caregivers, and healthcare professionals?
The Cancer Institute helps cancer patients and their families, through support groups, education programs, and research; people of all ages, through a variety of community education, screening, and prevention programs; and physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals involved in cancer care through educational programs and research.

Does the Cancer Institute provide treatment for cancer patients?
The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute is a non-profit, community-based agency working to address the burden of cancer in Northeastern Pennsylvania., focusing on research, education & support, and screening.  While direct cancer treatments are not available at the Cancer Institute, a wide variety of cancer treatments are available at our member institutions, which include:  Allied Services; Community Medical Center; Marian Community Hospital; Mercy Health Partners (Scranton and Wilkes-Barre); Moses Taylor Hospital; and Wyoming Valley Health Care System.

What is the Cancer Risk Program?
The Cancer Risk Program is a free service provided by the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute.  The Cancer Risk Program provides education, counseling, and cancer risk assessments to anyone concerned about their risk for cancer or their family history of cancer.  Click here for more...     

What is a cancer registry?
A cancer registry is an information system designed for the collection, management, and analysis of data on persons with the diagnosis of a malignant or neoplastic disease (cancer).  Cancer registries can be classified into three general types:

  • Health care institution registries: maintain data on all patients diagnosed and/or treated for cancer at their facility

  • Central registries: population-based registries that maintain data on all cancer patients within certain geographical areas.   The Regional Cancer Registry at the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute and the Pennsylvania Cancer Registry are population-based cancer registries.

  • Special purpose registries: maintain data on a particular type of cancer, such as brain tumors.
