Volunteer Opportunities
Are you passionate about helping others and saving the lives of people in your community? Do you need service hours and want to have fun completing them? If so, then the Northeast Regional Cancer Institute has volunteer opportunities for you! See some of the options listed below, and keep in mind that Cancer Institute staff members are available to help facilitate planning and community relations processes for your project.
-
Host a fundraiser such as a Bake Sale, Dance Contest, T-Shirt sale, Free Throw Shooting Contest, Candy Jar guessing, etc.
-
Hold an "It's All in the Game" night at your school. "It's All in the Game" is a complete, ready-to-go event developed by the Cancer Institute. Contact the Cancer Institute to find out more.
-
Integrate a message of cancer awareness into an existing or new school event/project with proceeds to support regional community and patient services. Such efforts might be undertaken in honor or memory of an individual connected to the school.
-
In June, volunteer for the Annual Cancer Survivors Celebration. This event draws between 1,200 and 1,500 cancer survivors, care givers, family and friends to a day of information, music, refreshments – and the chance for individuals who have been touched by cancer to meet, talk and share their experiences.
-
Assist with community and patient services activities - community cancer education programs, health fairs, etc. in conjunction with the Cancer Institute offices in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre.
-
Volunteer as needed in the Cancer Institute office to help with mailings and general office work.
-
In March, join students at numerous regional schools/colleges/universities in serving as a team captain for the Cancer Institute C.A.S.U.A.L. Day. The day features special C.A.S.U.A.L. (Colon Cancer Awareness Saves Unlimited Adult Lives) Day pins and t-shirts worn for a "dress down day" event to promote awareness about colon cancer. As a team captain, you could help encourage your friends, family, and teachers to get screened. As above, you may choose to participate in memory or in honor of an individual linked to your school or community. See below for detailed information on this project, or contact the Cancer Institute at 1-800-424-6724 or admin@cancernepa.org for information on other opportunities.
C.A.S.U.A.L. Day Service Project
C.A.S.U.A.L. (Colon cancer Awareness Saves Unlimited Adult Lives) Day is a program to raise awareness about colon cancer, one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in Northeast PA. The event began in 2003 and takes place annually in memory of Helen Phillips, a local woman who lost her battle with colon cancer. Team Captains at schools, businesses, and organizations throughout our area recruit friends, family, and co-workers to purchase special colon cancer awareness pins and shirts. On the last Thursday in March, everyone is asked to dress casual by wearing their shirts and/or pins and telling their loved ones to make sure to receive their regular screenings. Proceeds from the shirt and pin sales help support programming and research initiatives at the Cancer Institute.
