Cancer Survivors Park

Originally dedicated in October 2000, The Northeast Regional Cancer Institute Cancer Survivors Park is located within McDade Park in Scranton, PA. Intended as a tangible tribute to all those who are touched by cancer, the original park featured columns displaying hand-painted ceramic tiles created by local cancer survivors and caregivers.

Due to the nature of the climate in Northeastern Pennsylvania, the original design of the park was found to be unsustainable and the tiles were beginning to deteriorate. In order to ensure that the space remained a fitting tribute to those who have been touched by cancer, the Leadership Lackawanna Class of 2009 volunteered to refurbish the park. Financial assistance was provided by Lackawanna County through the Lackawanna Environmental Conservation & Outdoor Recreation (LECOR) Partnership Program and labor was donated by Sean Byrne Construction.

Rededicated in May 2010, the new park features beautiful benches and landscape work, along with engraved brick pavers in honor and in memory of numerous local survivors. This design allows the park to serve as a permanent contemplative space for the community to take inspiration from the courage of all cancer survivors.
